Welcome to the Department of Exercise and Wellness

Promoting healthy lifestyles is a key component of a prosperous global society and is important for an individual’s day-to-day health and wellbeing. Regular physical activity is the best prescription known to reduce the risks of many chronic diseases and disabling conditions and it is effective in improving mental health and physical function as one ages. The need for qualified, educated professionals in the areas of exercise and wellness and healthy lifestyle promotion is growing. Graduates from programs in the Department of Exercise and Wellness have developed the skills and strategies needed to promote physical activity and health in community, rehabilitation, academic, business, and agency settings. Graduates are prepared for jobs as health promotion specialists, wellness directors, physical activity and fitness leaders, spa directors, exercise physiologists, and college and university professors, just to name a few.

Glenn Gaesser
Dr. Glenn Gaesser

ASU Welcomes Dr. Glenn Gaesser, Professor of Exercise & Wellness

In August 2008, Dr. Glenn Gaesser joins the Department of Exercise & Wellness as a coming from the University of Virginia, where he served as a Professor on Exercise Physiology for nearly 20 years. Dr. Gaesser focuses his research on the effects of physical activity and diet on cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes. He was a leader in challenging the obesity-heart disease association, noted in his 2002 book, Big Fat Lies – The Truth About Your Weight and Your Health. Concerned about translating research to practice for those trying to lose weight, Dr. Gaesser has co-authored the following books: The Spark: The Revolutionary New Plan to Get Fit and Lose Weight – 10 Minutes at a Time and It’s the Calories, Not the Carbs. Currently, Dr. Gaesser is conducting research in flow-mediated dilation using high-resolution ultrasound methods. He has funding from the NIH to develop a wireless, multimode, artificial neural network-based physical activity monitor to assess physical activity and energy expenditure. A fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr. Gaesser is very involved as a leader in various scientific organizations. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Gaesser will teach courses in exercise physiology, physical activity and health, and advise graduate master’s and doctoral students.

Ph.D. Students

  • Siddhartha Angadi – He is transferring to ASU from the University of Virginia and will work with Dr. Glenn Gaesser.
  • Stephen Herrmann – He completed his master’s degree from Northern Iowa University and will work with Dr. Barbara Ainsworth.
  • Kristin Heumann – She completed her master’s degree from ASU and will work with Dr. Pamela Swan.
    Eleanor Odenheimer – She completed her master’s degree from San Francisco State University and will defer starting the program until 2009.
  • Shannon Smith – She completed her master’s degree from Texas Women’s College and will work with Dr. Cheryl DerAnanian.
  • Janelle Walker - She completed her master’s degree from Eastern Washington University and will work with Dr. Pamela Swan.
  • Bradley Warr – Currently a physician’s assistant, Captain Warr will work with Dr. Brent Alvar.
